Poverty in China

Poverty is a major issue in the world today from coast to coast and all over the world there are millions of people who suffer from poverty. Though there have been efforts to try and imporve the situation by many people. More than 300 million people in China have no access to safe and clean drinking water, most of them in comparatively poor rural areas. The US has give 25 million dollers to help improve water and sanitation access in Western China. "The Western Provinces Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene Promotion Project is intended to increase the access of poor communities to sustainable and equitable water supplies, sanitation and hygiene promotion services by adopting an integrated and participatory approach, which can be replicated in other provinces, according to a WB statement. The total investment costs are US $75.36 million, with US $25 million of loans from the WB, US $25 million of grants from the United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID) and US $25.36 million from the participating provinces of Shaanxi and Sichuan."
More then 60 percent of the investment will go to the imporvment access of safe drinking water through piped water supply systems, rain collection systems and wells. All schools within the project areas of Shaanxi Province and selected schools in Sichuan Province will be supplied with safe water. Over more then a quarter of the investment will go to improving sanitation by building and upgrading house hold, public, and school toliets. Also there will be garbage drop off points and handwashing and drainage facilities.

In china however you are faced with poverty and in many different ways aswell. If your a woman you may be poor because you born that way and you may stay poor because of your sex. Women have a lesser of a chance of getting out of poveritve situations then men in China would. For a girl being born into a poor rural family she faces malnutrition and lack of health care for her first five years. She may attend school but the classes are most likely not to be taught in her ethnic language and she would remain illiterate. finding work for a women is hard any chances she may have would be handed off to a man at any time and if she did get a job she would be paid less for it. Also the people in china, as well as most people every where, are more likly to be fibbed to by their government. When you go to look up information on the poverty situation in china you get a varity of numbers. the numbers change from site to site, which may just be cause by people not really know what they're talking about, the government sites show drastic changes where as others sites show change but not that big of a change. (http://www.unchina.org/about_china/html/poverty.shtml)
though that may be subject to personal oppions of the Chinese government and they way things over there is handeled.

“Green Poverty Reduction in China”

"Fostering the potential of green industries and energy sources in remote mountain areas and deserts is an important vehicle which can generate income and employment opportunities, while protecting the environment, "
-Alessandra Tisot, UNDP Senior Deputy Resident Representative in China

Some communities such as Guizhoy, Sichuan and Yunnan may be able to use seeds from a local tree for boi-fuel production. Then with the Green Poverty Reduction Act in China will create new sources of substances and to develop green energy in the areas surrounding the project.

I wrote this blog in hopes that people will be able to read this and see that there are things going on in more then the world around them. So I hope that after reading this people may try to make an effort to help others even in their own state or country. So with the efforts the country is making and other people all over the world make we will be able to make a dent in the ending of hunger in China and all over the world.

I think your statement of purpose is kind of important and reflects the attitude of a lot of Americans who are too wrapped up in their own little world to look globablly. I was just reading an article on China and its development and American and
Chinese attitudes toward one another. One analyst quoted in the article referred to China as a "fragile superpower" and the author of the article said that when he presented this idea to Chinese in China they asked "superpower?!" as if they'd never thought of such a thing and Americans had a similar reaction only it was to the word "fragile." I think there's a lot of press right now about China being this huge threat to America's standard of living -- using up all the oil in the world, taking away jobs and manufacturing and overwhelming us with its sheer size. But I think the reality is, at least for the foreseeable future, that China is "devloping" and that means many, many still live in poverty and don't have basic necessities. Another issue which I think IS important to the entire world is the environmental controls and laws in China. They're notoriously lax and affect other countries as well. For our own good, as well as the health and well-being of the Chinese I think we should be helping them create clean, livable environments and help their manufacturers deal witht he pollution problems.

The photo you have here is extremely disturbing! I cannot believe that the people have allowed that man and thousands of others to become so starved and frail.

In religion class we have recently been dscussing the common good and how it applies to every single human being living on this Earth. Even though people should learn how to manage their responsibilities,we are all imperfect and we all make mistakes. We need to watch out for eachother and take care of eachother!
